Successful candidates are expected to build strong, externally-funded, highly-visible research programs and to become recognized leaders in the field. The broad areas of the search are congruent with major Institute of Technology and Department of Mechanical Engineering initiatives for growth. The University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology includes departments of engineering, physical sciences, computer science and mathematics – a nationally unique structure that facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations. Applicants must have a doctorate in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline. Rank will depend upon the qualifications and experience of the applicants.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has a strong tradition of excellence in education and research. The department currently has 41 tenured or tenure-track faculty and graduates about 200 undergraduate students annually. It is home to graduate programs in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering, with a total graduate enrollment of about 250 M.S. and Ph.D. students. The department is home to a new NSF Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power.

The University is located in the heart of the vibrant Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area that is rated among America’s most livable cities and is home to 19 Fortune 500 companies.
